The Skin I'm In is a young adult novel written by Sharon G. Flake. The story follows the experiences of a black teenage girl named Maleeka Madison, who is struggling with low self-esteem and feelings of inadequacy due to her dark skin and rough, acne-covered complexion.
Maleeka is a smart and talented student, but she often feels overshadowed by her more popular and attractive classmates. She is also constantly teased and bullied by a group of girls at school, who call her names like "Mudball" and "Darkie" because of her skin color. Maleeka's only solace is her close friendship with her neighbor and classmate, Charlese, who is the only person who truly seems to understand and accept her.
As the story progresses, Maleeka becomes the target of a new teacher at her school, Miss Saunders, who is white and has a very different approach to teaching than Maleeka is used to. Despite Maleeka's initial resistance to Miss Saunders, she eventually comes to see the value in her methods and begins to develop a close relationship with her. Miss Saunders encourages Maleeka to embrace her unique qualities and encourages her to stand up for herself against her bullies.
Through her interactions with Miss Saunders and her own self-reflection, Maleeka begins to gain confidence in herself and her abilities. On her way home, two boys attack her and try and kiss her. At the very end Maleeka is given a poem by Caleb which is basically asking her to be his girlfriend. Not only does she try to impress everyone with her appearance but she also goes along with Char, and gets in trouble because she has no ability to say no and walk away.
