I have had my fair share of students who come to class with ankle monitors, who clown around constantly, who are involved in gang and drug activity outside of school. Not all positive though. To me Russell's downfall was what gave the book it's lasting impression -he made it from community college back up to a 4 year and even got a degree, yet he failed to live a peaceful life and ended up in a train accident which people think was a suicide. In all, this book echoes a sentiment that I as a teacher firmly believe: there are no bad kids. This biographical account gives a wonderful insight into the lives of the residents of Coney Island and the many hardships faced by them. This book also has some characters that are very likeable. He then attempts to set up a contract that would share profits from the book with the kids, but is ultimately blocked by NCAA regulations on amateur athletes.
I truly think this book is great, I think it deserves the rating it has. The author follows 3 maybe 4 if you included the somewhat shorter story of Stephon Marbury students from Lincoln High school at Coney Island. Frey follows four teenagers as they navigate the NCAA recruitment process while living and balling in the projects of Coney Island, New York. I really do recommend this book to anyone who likes sports or likes basketball would like to know the story behind this legend. This makes me want to appreciate what I have because some people have nothing, but in some way still working harder than me every single day. Russell is a very driven African American young man who tries his hardest to stay focused with important factors in his life. This shows that not everyone can accomplish what they want to do.
This talent was unique and his work ethic was even more special. However, the everlasting theme throughout the book was mostly about trust and knowing who to trust and who to not trust. It's what we would all be if we had the breeding and the work ethic to get there. We hear of Darryle cramming with flash cards and textbooks, as fanatically dutiful about test prep as he is about perfecting his gorgeous jump shot. I've heard the Lou Reed song and read some snippets of it being the place where the working class went to spent some time relaxing.

I've been following NBA basketball pretty closely the last 20 years and i was hoping that i just forgot the names of the 3 kids. Shipp warmly recounts Frey trailing him at school, to the summer camps, and on the recruiting visits. Basketball was their way out. That's something the author only partially admits to. The Last Shot now has - like Frey's prescience renders The Last Shot enduring.

The result is a startling and poignant exposé of inner-city life and the big business of college basketball. How, in spite of excellent skills on the court, many players fail to make it anywhere, owing to years of bad schooling. One is that it never faces up to the fact that the writer has a place in the story. For the four kids in the neighbourhood, basketball is the only way to escape from a lifestyle of crimes if they make the NBA.

These athletes must navigate their way through the often difficult world of college and professional basketball. The city could have bought that for the community but all they ever do for Coney Island is put up more rims. But i hope i would have tried. Frey does an excellent job of painting a picture of what life was like for these young men growing up in one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in America. However, the path to success is not always an easy one. I am not an emotional person by any means, but many scenes in this book left tears welling up in my eyes, such as the scene between Russel and his mother towards the end of the book. It is a story of hope, determination, and resilience in the face of overwhelming odds. The depiction of Coney Island is also very vivid, and it really brings the horrible living conditions in which the payers live come to life. The author takes interest in four teenagers as they explore the NCAA recruitment process. As these kids are in school they are going to parks after school and play basketball. Although this book does talk about a lot of basketball, there is a lot of racism in the book.

Even if that success had nothing to do with basketball, they needed it to get where they wanted to go in life. . His observations about the NCAA and black culture around athletics remain controversial, poignant, and contemporary twenty years later.
