Malcolm X was a prominent figure in the civil rights movement in the United States during the 1950s and 60s. Born Malcolm Little in Omaha, Nebraska in 1925, he was the son of a Baptist minister and civil rights activist who was killed when Malcolm was just a child. Growing up in poverty and facing discrimination and segregation, Malcolm turned to a life of crime and was eventually sentenced to prison for robbery.
While in prison, Malcolm discovered the Nation of Islam, a black nationalist movement that espoused the belief that black Americans were the original people of the world and that white people were a race of devils created by an evil scientist. Malcolm embraced the Nation of Islam and became one of its most vocal and influential leaders, taking the name Malcolm X to symbolize his rejection of his "slave" name.
As a leader of the Nation of Islam, Malcolm X was known for his fiery speeches and confrontational approach to civil rights. He believed in the use of self-defense and militant action to achieve equality for black Americans, and he rejected the nonviolent approach of civil rights leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. Malcolm X also criticized the mainstream civil rights movement for being too focused on integration and not doing enough to address the systemic economic and social issues that impacted the lives of black Americans.
In the early 1960s, Malcolm X began to break with the Nation of Islam and eventually left the organization. He began to shift his views on racial reconciliation and nonviolence, and he traveled to Africa and the Middle East to learn more about Islam and the struggles of people of color around the world. Upon his return, he founded the Organization of Afro-American Unity, which aimed to unite black people globally to fight against racism and oppression.
Tragically, Malcolm X was assassinated in 1965 while giving a speech in New York City. Despite his untimely death, his legacy as a civil rights leader and champion of black liberation lives on. His ideas and strategies continue to influence social justice movements around the world, and his message of self-determination and resistance to oppression remains relevant today.
