Kalpana Chawla was an Indian-American astronaut and the first woman of Indian descent to go to space. Born in Karnal, India in 1961, Chawla received her bachelor's degree in aeronautical engineering from Punjab Engineering College in 1982. She then went on to earn her master's and doctoral degrees in aerospace engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington and the University of Colorado at Boulder, respectively.
Chawla began her career as an engineer at NASA's Ames Research Center in 1988, where she worked on research projects involving powered-lift computational fluid dynamics. In 1994, she was selected as one of four astronauts from a pool of over 2,000 applicants to join the NASA astronaut corps.
Chawla's first spaceflight was as a mission specialist on Space Shuttle Columbia's STS-87 mission in 1997. During the mission, she conducted experiments on the behavior of microgravity on plants and human cells, as well as participating in the first joint U.S.-Russian space walk.
Chawla's second spaceflight was on Space Shuttle Columbia's STS-107 mission in 2003, where she served as the mission's lead spacewalker and mission specialist.
