"Devil at My Heels" is a memoir written by World War II veteran and Olympic runner Louis Zamperini. You will not believe it but I had decided to finish this book while I was traveling from Canada to Japan I had NOT thought about the relationship with the book and traveling to Japan and what happened??? I thank Jesus, that Louie is a brother in the Lord. I wish he had not written the newer version but had republished the older version with an added chapter or two bringing it up to date. He plunged into drinking and brawling and the depths of rage and despair. If Unbroken was written as a story of action and survival to eventually grace the silver screen, Devil at My Heels was written to see the heart of the man. Louis started off as a juvenile delinquent, then with guidance from his older brother, in 1936 he became a world class runner in the Olympics.

This one is more Louie. But the flashbacks of his captivity, especially the psychopathic brutality of a guard nicknamed "The Bird," continued to haunt him. He experiences a conversion to Christianity, changes his ways and never looks back. I was enthralled by the story and it forced me to think about my own life. What I really enjoyed about Devil at My Heels was that Zamperini did not sugar coat his past. I learned more about how a soldier had to survive on their own in a foreign environment before getting picked up by the enemy and tortured until liberated. They remained prisoners for two years, until the end of the war.
