Read this January for SPAN 301: Introduction to Literary Analysis. Gradually, word by word, we're absorbed into his experience of reading. He was buried in a tomb with his wife, Carol, in the cemetery at Montparnasse. . He must kill the owner of the estate. Narrated in the third person by an unnamed narrator the reader realises from the beginning of the story that Cortázar may be exploring the theme of escape. Mainly because the owner of the estate is near the end of the novel and cannot put it down.
The woman goes north, and he goes to her house. In time, the two lovers go their separate ways as they leave the cabin: the woman follows a trail leading to the north, while the man heads south. The Narrator also expresses judgments: "sketched abominably the frame of that other body. He seems to take pleasure in sitting in a high-backed armchair covered in green velvet as he reads and looks out the windows. The setting changes as the lover moves from the cabin in the woods into the house where he finds the husband sitting in a chair reading a novel. It has been said many times — nothing juices a novel like intense passion, the more intense the better.

A CONTINUITY OF PARKS The Art of Reading: This shortest short story ever written by Julio starts out by letting us know an unnamed aristocratic gentleman begins reading a novel but has to put the book down to attend an urgent business conference. The first part of the story focuses on his reading experience. Cortázar also manages a smooth transition from fiction to fact which would again place an emphasis on the closeness of fiction and fact. Cortázar implies that becoming engrossed in fiction is both a goal worth striving for and a way of losing hold of your identity.

The author leads the way like a well danced Tango. A simple and impressive story. Cortázar opposed the rule of General Perón and therefore moved to France in 1951. The last sentence of the story reveals that the two stories are actually one story--the embedded story is a story about the frame-story. Which makes the story that little more special considering the story is set over one page and in reality might be considered to be flash fiction. He may see the task at hand and murdering the estate manager is what it takes to get what he wants. His eyes are fully focused on the book when he is at home and sitting in his chair and he is unable to see his killer approaching him.
Creates suspense by presenting the stalking from the man's point of view. . The theme of betrayal is also evident in the story. This certainly sounds ideal to me. In the second paragraph of the story, the narrator follows him from the meeting in the cabin into the house to murder the husband. I won't say more in order not to ruin the surprise in this two-paragraph work of genius. So, what's happening around the character is joining with what's happening on the book he is reading.

On the train on his way back to his estate where he lives, he had resumed reading it. In reading Continuity of Parks we are seduced into the same experience of reading that the man reading is having. Aesthetic Magic: Having absorbed the beginning chapters, Basil is now completely and totally into his novel. We feel the suspense as we are made to identify with the lover as he approaches the final room.
