They are honest characters that exist in such a creative way that I find myself confused and in awe of the complexity that is demonstrated. Lin enters when Martin leaves and tells Victoria that her brother, a soldier, has died in Belfast. Victoria, upset and distant from Martin, starts a lesbian relationship with Lin. This was all so geniusly crafted. Audiences are forced to recognize that men play women, women play men, and adults play children. She also lets her creativity loose, jumping ahead a century between the halves of the story while the characters themselves only age 25 years. I didn't appreciate the "random" element of this play. I really want to see it performed now because I bet its even funnier when you can see the gender bender roles instead of just imagine it because it's quite hard to rememver which characters are being cross played so as to speak.

A lot of the themes in the play are quite dark, and troubling and immediate, but that doesn't stop it from being really fun. Basically the thing that blew my mind was the symbolism behind characters being played by actors o 4. The first act takes placei n Victorian Africa, suggeting the parallel between colonial and sexual repression. Clive and Harry toss a ball with Edward until Clive becomes frustrated with Edward's clumsiness. Really I don't know if the play is a liberal one, or secretly conservative.
However, the struggle for sexual freedom and self-definition of the two principal characters of act 1—Betty and Edward—continue unabated, now joined by Victoria. Homosexuals, though far from completely welcome, had established a presence in the cultural landscape of British society. I'm also not a massive fan of the gratuitous swearing and sex.
