Children of the River is a novel by Linda Crew that tells the story of Sundara, a Cambodian refugee who is struggling to adapt to life in the United States after fleeing the Khmer Rouge regime. The novel explores themes of identity, family, and the immigrant experience.

Sundara is a complex and multi-faceted character who is struggling to find her place in a new country and culture. She is torn between her traditional Cambodian values and the expectations of American society, and she is often caught between her desire to fit in and her desire to stay true to herself.

One of the main themes of the novel is the importance of family and the bond between siblings. Sundara's relationship with her younger brother, Sokha, is particularly poignant. Sokha is a constant source of support and comfort for Sundara, and she finds solace in his presence as she navigates the challenges of her new life.

Another major theme of the novel is the immigrant experience and the challenges that immigrants face when trying to adapt to a new country. Sundara faces numerous obstacles as she tries to build a new life in the United States, including language barriers, cultural differences, and discrimination. Despite these challenges, she remains determined and resilient, ultimately finding the strength and courage to pursue her dreams.

Overall, Children of the River is a poignant and thought-provoking novel that explores the complexities of identity and the immigrant experience. It is a powerful reminder of the resilience and strength of the human spirit and the enduring bonds of family.

It would hardly be appropriate for you to be telling her how to do things, would it? She is now a Junior in High school 4 years later and nothing has changed, things are still just as hard. Sundara is not able to get her mind off Jonathan. Cathy stands up for herself and decides to face Sundara; Sundara does not seem to want to face Cathy. Thus begins, for Sundara, the reality of the Cambodian Genocide under brutal communist forces. This theme symbolically represents the mouth of the river, the point where the water blends and assimilates to the rest of mainstream society. Parents of all cultures and countries--including America--have specific standards for whom they want their children to marry, be it race, ethnicity, education, or social class. And Lucius, their child. But she soon realized that it was not her fault, he had died shortly after she left, which was a long time before she let Jonathan into her life. Arthur is almost finished with it and is enjoying it. I am a first generation American who grew up trying to balance the respect my family expected of me for my roots and the joys of participating in American customs that furthered my sense of independence.

And too much homework assigned for this book :' For a brief time, it seemed the New Year had brought good fortune to the household of Tep Naro in the Cambodian village of Ream: a fat-cheeked new daughter born to his wife, Soka. Sundara has trouble understanding Jonathan's relationship with Cathy. If the sharing of my pharmaceutically-induced trainwreck can comfort somebody else or, even better, help save them from heading down this horrible path in the first place, it will help me feel that perhaps some good can come of my past four years. As the guilt builds up, however, he starts to lash out at other people. More than likely she is working through these questions for herself in the character of Jonathan. I had a negative impression of this book after reading the first chapter because I felt that it was poorly written and the dialogue and interactions between the characters seemed stilted and unnatural.

In the 2020's, maybe everybody has long-forgotten the Cambodian Genocide. This theme is most apparent in Pok Simo and his family. The story is told from Sundara's third person point of view. I read this book back in middle school, when it appeared on our summer reading list. Things would be hard ecspecially if you fell in love with a forbidden American boy. Sundara is not an American patriot or a Khmer Rouge "commie". It follows the story of a young girl who moves to a town to escape from the war in Cambodia. I really enjoyed and appreciated this story! This is what happened to Sandara, a Khmer girl from Cambodia, in the book "Children of the River" by Linda Crew.

Overall - I Highly recommend this book! Having read about this title in I felt connected to this family from the first sentence, glued to the page through two quick chapters of escaping on foot and then an unpleasant sea voyage before the story skips ahead four years, to when Sundara and her relatives are established in their own house in the U. WILLIAM LAVENDER'S career has spanned the areas of music, film documentary, theater, and literature. I enjoyed the story then, but like other readers, I rolled my eyes a bit at the aunt's behavior. He eventually married two or three more times. Sundara soon meets Jonathan, the star of the football team. Sundara soon finds out Chamroeun has been killed. Sundara eventually makes it to America.
