In a shot that comes even before the titles, we learn that 7,000 men were killed there during the war. Fontaine spends some time feeling Jost out and ultimately decides to trust the boy and escape with him, knowing he would have to be killed otherwise. Fontaine notices the wooden door of his cell is made up of thick boards joined together by a softer wood, so he sharpens the end of a spoon and begins to chisel away at the joints. By looking at three versions of this film at different times in history, we can see some methodologies like semiotics and rhetoric analysis, the filmmakers have changed over the years. None becomes a notable character.
He uses his mind. The sounds from around him become more important to the viewer.
